FAVELAS DENCITY

Dencity : Esthétique de l’accumulation et de la destruction. Phénomène selon lequel les choses s’accumulent et créent dans leur variété et leur nombre, un motif artistique complexe.

L’évolution de l’homme dans le milieu urbain a toujours été pour moi une source d’inspiration. J’avais représenté l’homme dans son milieu au travers du thème « Béton armé ». Dans cette série d’œuvres, l’homme s’armait contre son milieu. L’idée des Favelas a été la suite logique de ces représentations. Alors que les favelas s’embrasaient, que les politiques parlaient de nettoyage des favelas et de lutte contre les gangs, il m’était nécessaire de représenter ce milieu de vie dense, traumatisant, parfois apocalyptique.

Dencity est l’intitulé d’une série de tableaux sur les bidonvilles du monde où la densité frôle l’abstraction, nous amenant à réfléchir sur l’avenir de nos sociétés.

Les favelas, par leur densité, sont des illustrations du monde dans lequel nous évoluons.

Ma peinture reflète une densité qui a atteint son paroxysme, un monde dans lequel chaque jour l’homme est confronté à l’accumulation.

La superposition de couches de peinture sur la toile exprime cette densité. Elle est pour moi synonyme de noirceur du fait du sentiment d’oppression qui s’en dégage. On dit souvent qu’en peinture le noir ne devrait pas être utilisé car il n’est pas une couleur, mais dans la réalité le noir finit par être LA couleur, LA trace du temps. Telle la suif, le noir érode nos villes. Les hommes s’attachent à nettoyer ces traces en exprimant leur génie. Les favelas reflètent le besoin de couleur : l’intention colorée naît des graffitis, des logos, des acteurs du street art. Je m’attache alors à restituer la beauté de la favela et tel un acteur de ce milieu j’y insère des symboles issus de ma culture artistique.

«The work of Florent Espana has always been oriented towards the human being.

For him, it is necessary to represent his environment: traumatic, dense and sometimes, apocalyptic.

Dencity (Favelas) is the title of his series focused on the favelas and slums of the world.

This series of urban paintings almost abstract, is also a reflection focused on the future of our societies.

His painting, poetic, but also politic, becomes the expression of a density which reached its climax.

There is something hysterical in this endless accumulation which takes place on his canvas.

Florent Espana exposes us to the heights of our society , where the gap between social classes becomes increasingly large, where the place of birth is a sign of destiny, where sometimes the only space to breathe is the sky.

His thinking is intrinsically linked to the history of art, which constantly feeds his work with rich references, varied and passionate.»

This introduction was written by a journalist for an exhibition and clearly defines the lines

of my work.

I express in my painting my view of modern society. Poverty, overconsumption, density, failure or collapse of the capitalist system.

However the hope is expressed through color, graffity, words ...

Even if men are not represented, they occupied an important place in this work.

This is the question of the human being I'm asking.

I build my research in this way

I mix the tracks of time (deterioration, rain, flows, movements ...) and the traces left by

men (buildings, roads, streets, murals and graffiti). There are as many drawings as references (Basquiat, Keith Haring, Rothko, Picasso, Riopelle ...). These symbols are everywhere in my work and report my interest in art history and my situation of contemporary artist. I have deteriorated the cities in my paintings and destroyed them such as an apocalyptic vision of the world.

Like the recovery of earlier civilizations by contemporary civilizations, I superimposed the structures. As in medieval paintings, where the elements are structured floor by floor, Iplay with perspective and offer different points of view in the same scene (GRAND favelas). This freedom of framing and composition, I owe it to cubisme. I play with the lines, introduce text and symbols.

Visually, I fed my first paint of immaculate pure colors. I applied my matiere intuitively according to what Kandinsky defined as the principle of inner necessity. (Concerning the Spiritual in Art and in particular painting, Wassily Kandinsky). The picture I get is abstract. During this phase, I let my imagination and my mind travel. While generating volumes (as a sculptor), I isolate the color shapes, lines and directions which can refer to a realist picture.
